Crochet cat carrier cover

I learned that cats feel more comfortable in carriers they actually live around i.e. is just part of the furniture. My carriers also needed a cover for trips rather than just throwing a blanket over them. So, a cover that’s actually nice to look at.

Materials used

  • Yarn: House Garn Sulo in Sand Beige and Light Gray Melange (100% acrylic, 100 g = 210 m)
  • Hook: Size 4
  • Other: 2 snap fasteners per cover, tapestry needle

I chose acrylic yarn, as there are not really concerns on breathability or skin feel and is less absorbent to dirt the carrier may encounter, as well as more durable than natural fibers. Moreover, any nice color acrylic yarn can be found at the local store for a cheap price.

Construction

The cover is made of 3 panels of block stitch pattern, where one block consists of 3 double crochets. The main panel with a hole for carrier handle included, and auxillary (front and back) panels that are crocheted directly onto the main panel. Each side edge is bordered with half double crochets. The bottom border is made with three rows of waistcoat stitch, and the side and back panels are connected with it. For the front piece smal tabs are made for the snap fasteners by casting on 3 stitches on both sides of the front panel, and continuing the bottom border for these extra stitches as well. Finally, fasteners are sewn to the corners of the cover in the front.

For me, the size of the main panel was 25 x 55 blocks (ca. 41 cm x 83 cm incl. side border), and the front and back panel were 15 x 18 blocs (ca. 25 cm x 28 cm incl. side border). Note that the 15 blocks for the auxillary panels were picked along 17 blocks in the main panel to math the gauges is vertical and horizontal lentgh. Moreover, gauge needs to be checked for the half couble crochet and waistcoeat border, so the edges don’t curl. The hole for the carrier handle was simply made by doing a chain instead a block stitch pattern for an appropriate length in the row that would be the center-most row of the main panel. For me, this meant that in the 28. block row, I made 8 blocks, then chained 27 sts and skipped 9 blocks, and continued the rest 8 blocks as usual.

For reference, the cat carriers I have are sized W 32 cm x L 48 cm x H 31 cm. Although, I think for my carriers the cover size could have been one row shorter in each side.
